What difficulty are you playing on?Nightmare mode has some weapons disabled, some are DLC restricted, some are better at the start of the game without legend levels, some are better with.Most melee weapons on lower difficulty can melt zombies, and most guns can deal with the tougher ones. On higher difficulties at the start of the game, the Ranger Bow is the best choice hands down, but it drops off later game when you get Legend levels to boost damage for other types. Consumables can also change what's best, like if you're using a stasis grenade you can use melee weapons on larger enemies but it can't be used on Nightmare mode as it's disabled.In short, pick what you enjoy, because there's no real 'best' choice. So far the best weapon I have (Nightmare and soon done with The Following story) would be the upgraded crossbow.

Best Dying Light Weapon Mods
Mildish spoilers: You unlock it by progressing through the Children of the Sun ranks. I am legend 21 and have several points into bow damage (not sure exactly how many) which leaves the crossbow at over 1800 dmg. It will one-shot most goons and usually two-shot demolishers (headshots). Also ammo is recoverable and even available from the quartermaster.The crossbow has completely replaced the Bozak Bow for me.Melee-wise I am still finding better weapons as I progress through the Legend levels but military/safety machetes seem to be the best for my playstyle. With maxed dmg mods and angel sword upgrade they do dmg nearing 4000 atm.As a short answer, there are no best weapons in the game.

However there is highest tier blueprints, such as Orange(Legendary quality) blueprints. (Excepting the Bolter Poison, this applies lesser damage boost compared to the other Orange blueprints.)There are King and Clicker mods which can be considered best because of their perfect stats.

The Kings on the other hand, these can be found from police vans, police cars, lockers(Lock pick required), Freaks of Nature from The Following, chests(Hard difficulty), Dying Light Companion app and being given to you by survivors you save in game.More info about the blueprints can be found here -As well asThere are weapon tiers, Orange(Legendary) being the best and very common from the vendors as well. However there is an even higher tier called Gold(Yellow color), these are rare depending on your play-style and several factors in your game. Blueprints and weapon modifications you apply to it is based on your choice.

Upgrades can be collected by completing side and minor questsUsing the Weapon Upgrades is far less complicated than using blueprints or boosters described on previous pages of this chapter. After gaining a certain upgrade all you need to do is highlight the weapon you want to upgrade in the inventory and press the modification button.
Since this operation cannot be undo, make sure that you are really interested in that weapon and that it will serve you for a long time.Weapon Upgrades, just as blueprints, can be found in the game world, bought by merchants or be given for completing some tasks (mostly side quests or random meetings). As for their attributes, upgrades can allow you to deal more damage with a certain weapon or increase its durability. Try to select them wisely so that you will gain the most and actually feel the difference of the upgrades.Caution - Common weapons can be connected with only one upgrade, although the unique ones can have more upgrade slots.
